Kia Carens Clavis EV Set to Launch in India with 490 km Range

Launch Confirmation and Market Positioning:- Kia has confirmed that the Carens Clavis EV, its first mass-market electric MPV, will launch in India on July 15, 2025. This seven-seater electric MPV is poised to compete with the BYD eMax 7, priced between Rs. 26.90 lakh and Rs. 29.90 lakh (ex-showroom). Social media teasers from Kia India have highlighted the vehicle’s impressive 490 km range on a single charge, positioning it as a strong contender in the Indian electric vehicle market.

Exterior Design and EV-Specific Updates

The Kia Carens Clavis EV retains much of the exterior design of its internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart, the Carens Clavis, but incorporates EV-specific elements.

These include a closed-off front grille, redesigned front and rear bumpers, aero-optimized alloy wheels, and a front-mounted charging port. The suspension has been tailored to accommodate the additional weight of the battery and electric motor, ensuring optimal performance for this electric MPV.

Premium Interior Features

The interior of the Carens Clavis EV mirrors the premium design of the ICE version, featuring a dual-tone dashboard available in multiple color schemes, such as navy blue and beige.

It includes a dual 12.3-inch screen setup for the digital instrument cluster and infotainment system. Key features include ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, a 4-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, a smart air purifier, wireless charging, ambient lighting, an 8-speaker Bose sound system, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Advanced Safety and ADAS

Safety is a priority for the Carens Clavis EV, which is equipped with 18 standard safety features, including six airbags, all-wheel disc brakes, electronic stability control (ESC), vehicle stability management (VSM), traction control, ABS with EBD, and hill assist control.

The MPV also offers a Level 2 ADAS suite with 20 autonomous safety functions, such as adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert, ensuring a secure driving experience.

Powertrain and Battery Specifications

The Carens Clavis EV is expected to borrow its powertrain from the Hyundai Creta Electric, featuring two battery pack options: a 42 kWh unit with a 390 km range and a 51.4 kWh unit offering up to 473 km (MIDC cycle). Recent teasers suggest a claimed ARAI range of 490 km for the larger battery. The front-axle-mounted electric motor delivers 135 bhp for the smaller battery and 171 bhp for the larger one. The vehicle supports 11 kW AC fast charging (4–4.8 hours for a full charge) and 50 kW DC fast charging (10% to 80% in about 58 minutes). Additional features include adjustable regenerative braking via paddle shifters, Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), and Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) charging capabilities.

Market Impact and Competition

With an expected price range of Rs. 16 lakh to Rs. 26 lakh (ex-showroom), the Carens Clavis EV will compete with the BYD eMax 7 and serve as an electric alternative to ICE MPVs like the Toyota Innova Hycross and Maruti Invicto. It will also rival compact electric SUVs such as the Hyundai Creta Electric, MG Windsor EV, Tata Curvv EV, and Mahindra BE 6.
